Oxford Alumni Weekend Rome 15-18 March

Tuesday, March 20, 2018 - 15:00

A number of club members joined Simon Roper, Ian Gordon and Greg Timofiejew at the recent Alumni Weekend held in Rome. This event follows on from earlier initiatives to provide Alumni with an opportunity to meet in a European city and hear from leading figures at Oxford, ranging from the University Chancellor to leading academics teaching there. The events complement the annual Alumni weekends organised at Oxford which many of our members enjoy. Cambridge provide similar opportunities to their Alumni.

The first day the committee members met leaders of other Alumni groups based in Europe for an enjoyable lunch with Chancellor Lord Patten and officers of the Oxford Alumni office, including Christine Fairchild its Director. Following lunch, the Alumni office briefed us on their work and aims, and the Volunteers shared best practice with each other.

On Saturday, a series of talks enabled Alumni to hear from University figures including the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor, Dr Louise Richardson. She explained the University’s priorities and strategy for the future. Dealing with the implications of Brexit and ensuring the University does what it can to attract the brightest and best from all background, loom large. Continuing to offer top quality teaching in spite of reducing State support remains a central driver of strategy for the medium and long term.

A wide range of diverting presentations was also on offer, whilst others chose to spend the day visiting Rome’s many and magnificent classical and Baroque attractions.

A fine Black-Tie dinner in the elegant rooms of the Cavalieri Hilton allowed Alumni to make new friends and renew acquaintances.

On Sunday, the British Ambassador welcomed Alumni to the extraordinarily grand premises she is currently caretaking on behalf of the United Kingdom. A lavish lunch provided a good excuse to stroll in the extensive grounds and examine the many classical artefacts discovered within the grounds.
