  • Chasse Dinner

    Tuesday 12 November 2019.
    Restaurant des Curiades, Vieux-Lully.
Our annual game dinner, preceded by a wine tasting with a local producer, was attended by a group of enthusiasts, who enjoyed the very detailed presentation by the winery owner. 10 wines were offered for tasting and comment. The atmosphere was intimate and familial; the owner’s wife and small children were introduced and remained close by. We thus were a few minutes late to dinner, after loading participants’ purchases, but all was coordinated. The restaurant, recently featured in the Tribune de Geneve, lived up to expectations with original seasonal dishes

  • Freshers Evening

Wednesday 25th September 2019. 18h30 La Mere Royaume.
The club welcomed this year’s Freshers to La Mere Royaume and wished them well, as they looked forward excitedly (some a little apprehensively) to the weeks ahead. About 30 Freshers and a few parents, some from as far as Basle, took the opportunity to meet each other, and hear from members (new members in particular) what they should look forward and watch out for.
After some prefatory welcoming remarks and thanking Atlanticomnium for their financial support, President Simon Roper, invited club member Angus Macdonald to pass on a few pointers for the Freshers, gleaned from his own time at Cambridge and from being the parent of a current Cambridge alumnus, Callum. Angus and his wife, Hester, are well known to Oxbridge hopefuls for the excellent interview preparation sessions they hold shortly before interviews.
For the first time we were also able welcome a few current alumni who gave the benefit of their “real time” experience.

  • Golf Club Dinner

Wednesday 4th September 2019, Golf Club de Genève.
Our now annual Golf Club dinner did not fail to meet up to the expectations built on previous visits. The weather was clement, the views (whether over towards Lac Leman and the Jura, or towards the Mont Blanc massif) were spectacular, and a distraction to the lively conversations which nevertheless flowed freely. The group, of about 30 members and guests, was entertained to excellent food and fine wine in the splendid club house. Our thanks, as ever, to our host Tony Smouha.

Monday, March 18th 2019, Vieux Bois, Hôtel Ecolière de Genève
It was a full house and a splendid evening at the Vieux Bois on Monday, March 18th, 2019. After an excellent meal, Professor Alvaro de Rujula, from CERN, spoke to us in his inimitable style, delightfully illustrated, about Dark Matter and Dark Energy, those ‘materials’ that are neither seen nor heard and yet fill 95% of our Universe, including that dining room. A lively Q&A session followed, with many fantastic known unknowns having to be left as work in progress for present and future astroparticlephysicists and cosmologists …

        • Museum Visit, Barbier-Mueller Museum

          Saturday, November 24, 2018 – 11:00
          Old Town, Geneva

A small but distinguished members group enjoyed a fascinating visit to the Barbier-Mueller museum in the Old City. The guided visit focused mainly upon the museum’s unique collection of Benin asen or iron funeral sculputures; a genre previously unknown to any of the group. In addition to the fascinating commentary delivered by museum director Anne Joelle Nardin, the visit 100% achieved the objective of hosting extraordinary museums visits that one would probably never consider as an individual.
A happily educated group then retired to the close by Le Boel for a home-styled lunch served up by chef Adriano
As always, suggestions for future extraordinary museum visits in the Geneva area are most welcome.

        • Chasse Dinner

          Wednesday, November 21, 2018 – 19:45

The participants gathered at the Cave des Chevalières in the picturesque village of Soral, where the proprietor, Stephane Dupraz, presented a selection of the 17 wines he produces. These include the only Petite Arvine (typical Valais grape) grown in Geneva. The tasting was accompanied by a variety of snacks and dried meat. The participants learned how Geneva wineries have progressed from producing a few varieties to the present wide range of traditional and non-traditional wines, of greatly improved quality.

Following this agreeable visit, the group moved to the Restaurant de la Fontaine, a typical village restaurant 100 yards from the winery, where an excellent dinner of seasonal game dishes was served. Conversation was lively and the evening ended towards 11 PM.

          Tuesday, September 18, 2018 – 18:30
          La Mère Royaume

Club President, Simon Roper hosted a reception for the Year 2018 Freshers about to go up to Oxford or Cambridge, while also taking the opportunity to formally welcome recent members to the Club. We were also joined by representatives of local schools, glad to have the opportunity to fare their recent charges “bon chance”.

Attendance was the highest we have enjoyed, with almost sixty present. The two Universities were equally represented, with a balance between graduate and undergraduate students. The event provided a unique opportunity for attendees to meet both Freshers and Members from the Geneva area before going up.

After thanking our sponsors, Atlanticomnium, Simon congratulated the audience on their achievement, wished them well for their first term, and encouraged them to join the club in due course.

Angus MacDonald, (Cambridge) provided some words of advice for those about to make this big step. He emphasized making the most of this unique opportunity, not being daunted by the prospect and taking advantage of the many different ways students are able to profit from the experience.

After the warm feedback from participants both at the event and afterwards we will try to repeat this format next year.

        • Oxford Alumni Weekend Rome 15-18 March

          Tuesday, March 20, 2018 – 15:00
          Rome

A number of club members joined Simon Roper, Ian Gordon at the recent Alumni Weekend held in Rome. This event follows on from earlier initiatives to provide Alumni with an opportunity to meet in a European city and hear from leading figures at Oxford, ranging from the University Chancellor to leading academics teaching there. The events complement the annual Alumni weekends organised at Oxford which many of our members enjoy. Cambridge provide similar opportunities to their Alumni.

The first day the committee members met leaders of other Alumni groups based in Europe for an enjoyable lunch with Chancellor Lord Patten and officers of the Oxford Alumni office, including Christine Fairchild its Director. Following lunch, the Alumni office briefed us on their work and aims, and the Volunteers shared best practice with each other.

On Saturday, a series of talks enabled Alumni to hear from University figures including the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor, Dr Louise Richardson. She explained the University’s priorities and strategy for the future. Dealing with the implications of Brexit and ensuring the University does what it can to attract the brightest and best from all background, loom large. Continuing to offer top quality teaching in spite of reducing State support remains a central driver of strategy for the medium and long term.

A wide range of diverting presentations was also on offer, whilst others chose to spend the day visiting Rome’s many and magnificent classical and Baroque attractions.

A fine Black-Tie dinner in the elegant rooms of the Cavalieri Hilton allowed Alumni to make new friends and renew acquaintances.

On Sunday, the British Ambassador welcomed Alumni to the extraordinarily grand premises she is currently caretaking on behalf of the United Kingdom. A lavish lunch provided a good excuse to stroll in the extensive grounds and examine the many classical artefacts discovered within the grounds.

Rafa Carrascosa told how MSF operates, independently of politics, race, religion and culture, Els Torreele told of the global drive for equitable access to drugs and medical care, and Ante Wind told how field workers overcome the diverse difficulties constantly facing them to be greeted with ‘thumbs up’ from those waiting. Their commitment was palpable and they fielded incisive questions from the floor with great skill. The Q&A photo shows, l to r, club President, Simon Roper, and the MSF quartet, Rafa, Els, Ante and Damien Huaux who helped plan this successful evening.

Our now-traditional autumn wine tasting, followed by a dinner with game specialties, took place on Wednesday November 15th. We had chosen to hold the event in Choully, a hilltop village outside Satigny, which owing to its prosperity derived from the well-exposed vineyards which cover the slopes, is one of Geneva’s few remaining unspoiled villages, where properties pass from one generation to the next. It also enjoys a splendid situation, with views over the city of Geneva towards the Mt. Blanc and the Salève, the Bellegarde gap, the Jura, the wooded valley of the Allondon the Pays de Gex and the lake. The centerpiece of the village is the Domaine de Choully, a 17th century mansion.

Our tasting was held at the clos du Chateau de Choully, opposite the manor house, in one of the historic farm buildings. We were given a tour of the winery, renovated in 2010 by the new owners, Lionel and Nathalie Dugerdil and tasted some of the products, including their red assemblages, which were particularly appreciated.

We then moved to the Auberge de Choully, a typical village café, where we enjoyed a menu of excellent “chasse” dishes prepared by the owner, Pierre Descloux. These were accompanied by a Pinot Blanc from another local producer, la Clé de Sol, and a Gamay vielles vignes from the Clos du Château.

This pleasant evening was organized by Alexander Hawthorne, committee member and ex-President.

          Wednesday, October 11, 2017 – 19:00
          Château de Penthes, Pregny

There was a good turn-out of over 50 members and guests at the Château de Penthes. All enjoyed a fine meal and excellent conversation followed by a presentation of the SolarStratos project by its CEO, Roland Loos. This Yverdon-based enterprise aims to fly a solar-powered aircraft into the stratosphere- “to the edge of space”- to prove it can be done in a man powered craft, and to create a platform for future commercial spin-offs, such as surveillance drones powered by solar energy which are able to remain aloft for long periods.

On a previous adventure, the pilot and initiator of the project, Raphaël Donjon, navigated his solar-powered boat PlanetSolar around the world. Then he needed a life-jacket. This time he will be relying on a cosmonaut’s life-supporting spacesuit. The project’s technical challenges and the formidable human adventure involved inspired numerous questions. A future powered only by renewable energy, even in the skies, now really seems within reach.

You can follow the progress of the project via this link https://www.solarstratos.com/en/

After the lively question and answer session, Club President, Simon Roper, thanked the organisers and gave a Vote of Thanks to Mr. Loos on behalf of the Club.

Not to be discouraged by the unseasonably wet weather, a doughty group of walkers gathered at the Saleve Cable Car on Friday 11th August for a short circular walk on the top of the mountain. After a gentle but rather soggy walk of about 4 kms, the walkers gathered at the Panoramique restaurant for a fine meal and good company. As our group was the last to leave the restaurant, we were treated to our own cable ride back to the car park and our rides home. An entertaining start to the weekend.

École hôtelière de Genève, Avenue de la Paix

Once again, the engaging students at this École Hôtelière served us with a meal that was up to their usual high standards. After dinner, club member Henri Rueff outlined the complexities of living in the high and/or dry places that form about half of the landmass that covers a third of the surface of our planet: “Food security, climate change, and people in deserts and high altitude mountains: why should we care?” Using case studies mainly in Mongolia and Pakistan, Henri explained how customary lifestyles are threatened by climatic and institutional changes, as well as the venality of some governments and landlords. Nevertheless, climate-smart agriculture is offering interesting prospects for adaptation in these resource-scarce lands.

After a fine meal, carefully presented by the students at this École Hôtelière, club member Bridget Dommen gave us a delightful and unfamiliar view of how Geneva became Swiss 200 years ago. In ‘Two Gentlemen and Twenty-Two Cantons’, Bridget revealed the crucial rôle of distinguished Corfiote John Capodistrias, a Greek Foreign Minister of the Russian Empire, in disentangling the shambles and intrigues existing at the fall of Napoleon. The other mover and shaker was eminent Genevan Charles Pictet de Rochemont, statesman and gentleman farmer, who may, thanks to Bridget, be remembered by those present as much for his dealings in sheep as for his diplomacy!

After dinner at this restaurant in nearby France, we had the pleasure of a fascinating talk by club member Matthew Kahane on “Happenstance and Historical Forces”. With a long career in the UN Development Programme, Matthew described his very personal involvement in a series of extraordinary events in Sri Lanka, Nepal, Belarus, Samoa – to name but a few places – almost always in conditions of political turbulence of one kind or another. He astonished some of us with his accounts of how UN personnel manage to fly by the seat of their pants when they are put on the spot out of reach of headquarters.

The group were joined at L’Horizon restaurant by a few non walkers for apéros, and more sightseeing, before sitting down to a fine meal and a welcome flow of cool summer wines. Refreshed and replete the group then headed home happily by way of the cable car. An excellent way to start a July weekend in Geneva. Do join us next year! Organized by Simon Roper
